The Iraqi Ministry of Finance confirmed on Saturday that any mechanism for paying the amounts owed by those convicted in corruption cases must ensure that the public treasury receives its full dues, in response to a statement issued yesterday by the Supreme Judicial Council.
The ministry stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that its role in cases related to recovering funds obtained from corruption cases is limited to financial aspects and recovering the treasury’s rights.
She added that any mechanism for paying the amounts owed by convicts “must be binding and enforceable, in a way that preserves public funds and the rights of the state.”
The ministry explained that judicial proceedings or pardon requests submitted to the courts fall within the exclusive jurisdiction of the judicial authority, which exercises its powers in accordance with the approved legal frameworks.
The Ministry of Finance reiterated its commitment to integration with the judiciary and relevant regulatory bodies, in order to strengthen efforts to protect public funds in accordance with the law.
The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council revealed on Friday a “roadmap” that it said was legal and constitutional and was being coordinated with the Prime Minister’s office. The roadmap aims to reduce judicial procedures against those accused of administrative and financial corruption cases, provided they voluntarily return public funds. The Council confirmed that the same mechanism adopted in the “tax deposits” case would be followed with those accused in the “North Refineries Company” file.
