A military magazine revealed that the US air operations center at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar was put out of service as a result of Iranian strikes in the first weeks of the war.
Air & Space Forces Magazine quoted a senior U.S. official and sources familiar with the attack as saying that the center, which has run U.S. air campaigns in the Middle East for more than two decades, was hit directly by several Iranian missiles.
The report indicated that the US military, anticipating that Al Udeid Air Base would be targeted, had been conducting its operations since the beginning of the war from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, after transferring personnel from the facility located in Qatar before the outbreak of the confrontation.
The magazine noted that the damage to the Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base had not been previously disclosed, and that the facility’s proximity to Iran and the extent of the damage raised questions about the feasibility of rebuilding it.
The center reports to the U.S. Air Forces Central Command, which is the air component of U.S. Central Command.
The United States used the center to manage its air campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, its operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, as well as its recent operations against Yemen.
