US President Donald Trump on Thursday described the US House of Representatives’ vote to restrict his war powers as “an unpatriotic act”.
The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from continuing military operations against Iran without legislative authorization, in a move reflecting the parliamentary effort to limit the White House’s powers in managing the ongoing conflict.
The House voted 215 to 208 in favor of the resolution on war powers, after four Republican representatives joined the Democratic bloc supporting the bill.
The resolution requires the president to withdraw U.S. forces from any hostilities against Iran, unless Congress formally declares war or issues a special authorization for the use of military force.
This vote is largely symbolic at the moment, as it requires Senate approval to take effect, in addition to the ongoing constitutional debate about the binding nature of war powers resolutions issued by legislators.
However, this parliamentary move represents a rare step of bipartisan agreement to rein in the administration on the issue of the war, which has entered its fourth month. The passage came after a surprise postponement last month following the failure of three previous attempts.
In the same context, the Senate had previously submitted a similar bill in a procedural vote, without yet setting a date for the next session to vote on it definitively.
It is worth noting that the decision was supported by all members of the Democratic Bloc without any dissenting votes, while seven members of the House of Representatives abstained from voting.
