Tom Harb, director of the American Middle East Coalition for Democracy and a prominent member of the Republican Party, revealed on Saturday details that contradicted recent reports about reaching a preliminary agreement or outlines for a new agreement between the United States and Iran, describing the reports on this matter as “lacking any credibility and falling within the realm of evasions.”
Harb clarified this in a special statement to Shafaq News Agency, in response to media reports and speculations from Pakistani sources indicating that there are efforts to promote an imminent US-Iranian agreement.
Harb strongly refuted the rumors that the alleged agreement included conditions to lift sanctions on Tehran and open all corridors as a preemptive step seven days before the actual start of negotiations, stressing that “this proposal cannot be considered correct in any way.”
Harb accused intelligence agencies of being behind the leaks, noting that they were “deceptions resulting from coordination between Iranian and Pakistani intelligence.”
He continued, saying: “The news that the Iranians will get everything they want, from opening the corridors to lifting the sanctions, before negotiations even begin… this is completely unbelievable.”
Regarding the official American position and the source of the decision, Harb stressed that “the final word on this matter rests with President Trump, who has not issued any statement or confirmation in this regard so far.”
Pakistan, which is mediating to reach a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, is making a “last-ditch effort” to end the war between the two countries and begin negotiations on a broader agreement.
On Friday, the Iranian capital, Tehran, received Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Pakistani army chief, as part of intensive diplomatic efforts led by his country, amid escalating tensions and mutual threats between the two warring nations.
Munir is considered the main mediator between the United States and Iran since the start of the war, and his presence in Tehran, days after lower-level talks, may indicate a “last-ditch effort” by Pakistan to reach an agreement, according to Axios.
