Reuters, citing a Pakistani source involved in mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, reported that the two countries may reach an agreement soon, as negotiations enter their final stages. According to Reuters, the Pakistani source stated on Friday that there has been progress in the informal negotiations, and that an upcoming meeting between the two sides could result in the signing of an agreement.
He also explained that the two sides will first sign a memorandum of understanding, followed by a comprehensive agreement within 60 days, with the source, who asked not to be identified, saying: “The detailed agreement will come later. Both sides agree in principle, but the technical details will be discussed later.”
A diplomatic source said that Pakistan’s chief mediator, Army Chief Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday and made significant progress on “thorny issues,” although Tehran stressed that the fate of its nuclear program was still undecided, while US President Donald Trump says the agreement will open the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters quoted a senior Iranian official as saying that Munir’s visit had boosted hopes for a second round of talks and an extension of the ceasefire, but he noted that fundamental disagreements over the nuclear program continued.
A Pakistani security source told Reuters that Washington offered to lift sanctions and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets to ensure an agreement could be reached.
But the source added that Iran would not reopen the strait unless a permanent ceasefire was reached and the United Nations provided guarantees that the United States and Israel would not launch any future attacks. The source said, “We hope the Field Marshal will carry a draft resolution with him when he leaves Tehran.”
While Trump announced on Thursday that Iran had agreed to hand over its stockpile of enriched uranium, he stressed that the chances of reaching a settlement were “very high” and that the two sides were getting closer to a final agreement.
Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said U.S. forces were ready to resume combat operations if no agreement was reached.
