Pakistani security sources reported on Wednesday that the ceasefire agreed upon in mid-June, as part of a framework agreement between the United States and Iran, will be extended, according to the German news agency DPA.
Sources familiar with the matter told the agency that the extension could last for an additional 60 or even 90 days, but noted that it has not yet been decided whether the ceasefire extension will be officially announced.
Pakistan is playing a mediating role in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
This comes as reports indicate that an agreement between Iran and Oman regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is imminent.
Pakistani security sources said it was possible to reach an agreement before next Saturday.
The 60-day period allotted for negotiations, which was originally stipulated in the framework agreement between the United States and Iran, ends in mid-August.
The United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, 2026, and Iran responded by bombing countries in the region and targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In mid-April, US President Donald Trump announced a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict. In mid-June, the United States and Iran, with Pakistani mediation, agreed to a framework agreement stipulating a ceasefire, but both parties violated it in July.
The Pakistani remarks come as a senior Iranian source told Reuters on Wednesday that talks aimed at reviving the interim agreement reached in June or setting a timetable for its implementation have made no progress.
The agreement reached in June stipulated an “immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts,” but it quickly collapsed when US President Donald Trump declared on July 7 that it was “over” and the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced its “suspension” a week later.
The United States accuses Iran of failing to fulfill its commitment to open the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran says Washington has broken promises including lifting the blockade on Iranian ports and releasing frozen Iranian assets.
The Iranian source said, “One of the issues being discussed through intermediaries is the return of the United States to the interim agreement (from which it withdrew) and setting a timeframe for implementing the commitments. No progress has been made at all on this issue.”
