US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States controls a large amount of Iranian money and assets, noting that Tehran is facing difficult economic conditions and does not have the ability to borrow.
Trump added, in statements reported by American media, that Washington is considering three strategies for dealing with Iran. The first is to monitor the extent of its deteriorating situation, the second is to launch strong military strikes, while the third is based on exerting economic pressure, stressing that the United States is already implementing this option.
He pointed out that Iran is suffering from very high inflation rates, and that its currency has lost a large part of its value, noting that the Iranian government is facing difficulties in paying the salaries of its soldiers.
Trump’s remarks come at a time when the US administration is moving towards intensifying economic pressure on Tehran, coinciding with the ongoing crisis related to the Strait of Hormuz, while reports indicate that Washington currently prefers to use economic tools rather than launch a new large-scale military operation against Iran.
