The Spanish Interior Ministry announced on Friday that approximately 49,000 migrants had managed to infiltrate the Ceuta enclave in North Africa during the past 24 hours .
The Spanish Interior Ministry said migrants poured in from Morocco by sea and land and were able to sneak across the border, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, sources in law enforcement agencies in the Spanish city of Ceuta in North Africa revealed that more than 20,000 Moroccan migrants crossed the land border into the city without encountering resistance from Moroccan security forces, according to Spanish media.
Media reports indicated that “entire families walked around the border breakwater in Tarajal to enter Spanish territory, and the Civil Guard was unable to stop their advance.”
She noted that after the majority of the migrants had crossed, the police intervened in an attempt to contain their flow and direct them towards warehouses used as temporary detention centers.
In the same context, the Spanish news agency EFE reported the discovery of 15 bodies off the coast, believed to be those of people who tried to swim from Morocco to Ceuta.
The agency explained that the bodies were handed over to members of the Spanish Civil Guard to conduct autopsies and determine the exact cause of death.
The city of Ceuta witnessed a sharp increase in the number of migrants this week, who tried to enter it from Morocco by swimming or on foot.
Thousands of young Moroccans gathered yesterday, Thursday, at the border between Morocco and Ceuta, before the Spanish authorities sent additional reinforcements of police, civil guard and military forces to the city.
