Scientists have claimed that a “scientific breakthrough” based on high-intensity UV light, could be a new and powerful weapon in the war against Covid-19.
Chemical exposure or high intensity ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the most common ways of disinfecting surfaces from bacteria and viruses.

In the latter case, viruses, there should be sufficiently high levels of ultraviolet radiation – 200 to 300 nanometers – to kill unwanted germs.

Such devices exist today, but they are very expensive, and they use mercury discharge lamps, which are bulky and short-lived, and require a large amount of energy to operate. It is also not quite ideal for combating “Covid-19″.

However, using theoretical modeling of a range of materials, researchers at Pennsylvania State, the University of Minnesota and two Japanese universities believe they have found the holy grail of transparent conductors, which can allow cheap and easy-to-produce LED lamps that emit ultraviolet light at a density high enough to kill Corona Virus.

Manufacturers of computers, smartphones, and lighting often struggle to find transparent materials that work in the visible light spectrum, not to mention the UV spectrum. But the researchers have settled on a substance called strontium niobat, as a potential game-changer.

One researcher, Joseph Roth, a PhD candidate in Materials Science and Engineering in Pennsylvania, explained: “While the first driver for developing UV transparent conductors was to build an economic solution to water purification, we now realize that this breakthrough discovery can provide a solution to stop activation.” Covid-19 “in aerosols, which can be distributed in HVAC”.

The researchers obtained $ 90,000 in seed funding to determine the “moderate area” of UV intensity and exposure time to eliminate airborne viruses. This stage of the test will be conducted at the Biosafety Level 2 Laboratory at Park University, Pennsylvania.

Then, the team takes and manages their results against mathematical fluid modeling and lighting simulation, to learn how to take custom UV emitters and apply them to various building ventilation systems, to prevent the spread of the Corona virus and other pathogens through the air we breathe, and redistribute it in our homes, companies, offices, and hospitals.

“This research may help accelerate the return to common building spaces such as offices,” said the professor of architecture in Pennsylvania, Atamtorctor.
