Parliament Speaker Mohammad Al-Halbousi stressed on Monday the need to protect peaceful demonstrators and work for radical reforms.

This came during a meeting today, November 4, 2019, a delegation from the US House of Representatives headed by Democratic Representative in Washington and Chairman of the Armed Services Committee Adam Smith, where he discussed relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

A statement issued by the office of Halboussi, the latter reviewed the political developments in the country and the legitimate demands of the demonstrators, and packages of reforms approved by the House of Representatives, and procedures relating to constitutional amendments, and the election law.

He explained that “Halbousi stressed the need to protect the demonstrators and not to attack the security forces, while maintaining the peaceful demonstrations, and work on radical reforms to provide a decent life for the Iraqi people.”

“The meeting discussed the relations between Baghdad and Washington, and the need to expand economic cooperation between the two countries, and the development of investment to achieve employment opportunities for youth employment.”

Halbousi also discussed efforts by the US-led international coalition to fight ISIS and pursue its cells, stabilize the restored cities and help return displaced people to their cities.

For his part, the head and members of the US delegation expressed the readiness of the United States to provide more support to Iraq politically, economically and militarily, and to maintain its stability and the unity of its people and territorial integrity.
