A member of the Al-Fateh Alliance, Representative Hassan Shaker, revealed, on Friday, the existence of a secret document that allows US forces to stay in Iraq from 20-28 years.
Shaker said in a press statement, “The survival of the American presence in Iraq is unacceptable, and the House of Representatives’ decision regarding it is clear and firm,” adding that “we have accepted that the exit of these forces will be in stages starting with the beginning of next year 2021.”
He added, “But there is a very important thing that was revealed recently, which is that the initial dialogue that took place between Baghdad and Washington resulted in an unannounced agreement written in a document in the Foreign Ministry, which allows the American forces to stay 20-28 years in the country.”
He stressed, “He has not yet obtained this document, and the government is aware of it,” noting that “if the document is proven to be confirmed, it will create a great popular reaction in Iraq, because the survival of the US forces is totally rejected.”
He explained, “What the American General McKenzie said to an Arab newspaper recently, and was covered by the media, did not come out of thin air, and it seems that there is an unannounced agreement. If it happened, there would be a very big problem because the people reject it.”
Yesterday, Thursday, the Commander-in-Chief of the US Central Command, General Kenneth McKinsey, stated that his country will reduce its forces in Iraq and Syria during the coming months, while indicating that his country is trying not to inflame the situation in Iraq.
“The New York Times” quoted McKinsey as saying that he expects the American and other NATO forces to maintain a long-term presence in Iraq, to help fight terrorism and stop what he called Iranian influence in the country, “as he put it.”
He added, “Other US officials said that discussions with Iraqi officials that will resume this month may lead to a reduction in the number of forces to about 3,500.”
General McKinsey and other US officials emphasized that “the United States can withdraw its forces from Iraq and Syria, because local forces are increasingly able to confront ISIS on their own, with some US technical, intelligence and logistical assistance.”
William Robock, US Deputy Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, said, “Our assessment of ISIS is that there is a threat but it is not an increasing threat. They are unable to launch attacks or complex operations.”
