Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani announced a road map to demarcate the border and share wealth with Iraq in the event of the declaration of the independent Kurdistan after the referendum scheduled for September 25, will be the dialogue, evidence and historical documents of geography.
“The referendum is the first step for this, and for the first time in history, the people of Kurdistan decide freely for the future,” Barzani said in response to a question from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
“Later we will start negotiations with Baghdad, and we will reach an agreement on borders, water and oil,” he said.
“We will take these steps, but if they do not, the situation will be separate.”
“Nobody expects everything to be settled 24 hours after the referendum, and we have to make progress, even if it is slow, but certainly the agreement will be the end,” he said.
On the borders of Kurdistan, Barzani said, “We want to talk with Baghdad first on these issues, we want open and friendly negotiations and we want to solve them with historical and geographical documents.”
“The Shiites in Baghdad are in power and Iran has an influence on them, so I think Iran can help,” he said.
