Shafaq News/ Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani announced, on Tuesday, the details of the dollar crisis, which he described as a “battle”, announcing at the same time the arrest of a network of “major speculators” linked to speculators in the Kurdistan Region.
“The dollar crisis is not a crisis, but rather a battle between the state, which insists on completing reform of the financial and banking system, and an affected group, which is a group of speculators and smugglers,” Al-Sudani said in a press conference followed by Shafaq News Agency.
He added, “We are continuing with determination to pursue speculators and smugglers of foreign currency,” noting that “the US Treasury’s decision on 14 Iraqi banks is not a punishment.. The US Treasury said that 14 banks do not want them to deal in dollars, and that these banks exist and deal in Iraqi dinars and other currencies.” “.
In a related context, the Prime Minister said, “The National Security Agency carried out a heroic operation that toppled a network of major currency speculators,” explaining that “the speculators were setting an exchange rate and communicating with people who would withdraw dollars from the market for them.”
He continued, “The great speculators were associated with others in the Kurdistan region, through whom the currency was smuggled,” adding, “In cooperation with the Kurdistan region, a speculative network in the city of Erbil was also overthrown.”
He pointed out that “one of the speculators who were arrested was sentenced to life imprisonment on the same charge in 2001 and was pardoned in 2002.”
