Sudanese - The development route is the best shortest and least expensive corridor in terms of transportation and transitShafaq News/ Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed on Sunday that the development road project is one of the important and strategic projects that the Iraqi government is focusing on.

This came during his meeting today with Turkish Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Oraloglu, who is visiting the capital, Baghdad, in order to mature the joint understandings between Iraq and Turkey regarding the development road project, according to a statement issued by Al-Sudani’s office.

The statement quoted Al-Sudani as saying that its implementation (the development road project) will strengthen the common ties between Iraq, Turkey and the rest of the countries of the region within the common interests, pointing out that it is the best, shortest and least expensive corridor in terms of transportation and transit and linking the Middle East to the European continent.

The statement added that Al-Sudani praised the enthusiasm of the Turkish side for participating in the major project, stressing the necessity of continuing technical dialogues between the two countries, to reach the economic model through which the project will be implemented.

For his part, the Turkish Minister of Transport reiterated his country’s serious desire to actively participate in the development road project, expressing the Turkish government’s satisfaction with Iraq’s plans and essential steps, and its great and constructive efforts in the field of advancing and reforming the Iraqi economy.

Yesterday, Saturday, the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibas Al-Saadawi, held an expanded meeting in Baghdad, with the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, and his accompanying delegation, to discuss the development road project.

It is noteworthy that the value of the development road project is estimated at 17 billion dollars to connect an important port, “Al-Faw Grand Port,” for goods on the southern Iraqi coast to the border with Turkey by extending a railway and road network.

The development road aims to link the port of Al-Faw in southern Iraq, which is rich in oil, with Turkey, turning the country into a transit center by shortening travel time between Asia and Europe in an attempt to compete with the Suez Canal.

The Iraqi government envisions high-speed trains transporting goods and passengers at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, in addition to extending lines to local industrial and energy centers, which could include oil and gas pipelines.

According to the plans, the main transportation roads will be linked to the main port of Al-Faw on the shores of the Gulf through modernizing and building more than 1.2 thousand kilometers of railways and highways linking Iraq to neighboring countries.
